Write a sensitive research summary

Write a sensitive research summary that communicates findings, uncertainty, methods, limitations, and implications while protecting participants, communities, confidential sources, and restricted data.

Public value does not override consent, confidentiality, or foreseeable harm.

When to use

  • Use for internal, participant, public, policy, media, funder, or community summaries.
  • Obtain qualified ethics, safeguarding, privacy, legal, security, and community review where needed.

Procedure

  1. Confirm audience, purpose, consent, ethics approval, promises, dissemination limits, and review authority.
  2. Map findings, evidence strength, method, population, context, missing voices, uncertainty, and limitations.
  3. Assess re-identification from quotes, rare attributes, geography, dates, small cells, images, combinations, and external knowledge.
  4. Minimize or aggregate details while preserving meaning; use safe pseudonyms and controlled quote approval.
  5. Avoid stigmatizing, deterministic, sensational, deficit-only, or causal claims unsupported by design.
  6. Include participant and community context, counterevidence, structural factors, limitations, support resources, and appropriate action.
  7. Test alternate formats, translations, accessibility, metadata, file properties, links, and derivative reuse.
  8. Obtain independent harm and evidence review, publish through controlled channels, and monitor effects.
