Prepare for a salary negotiation

Prepare a salary negotiation from verified offer terms, market evidence, personal priorities, and clear decision thresholds.

Negotiate the complete offer using truthful evidence.

When to use

  • Use after scope and enough offer terms are known to make a decision.
  • Research local rules before discussing salary history, protected information, or restrictive terms.

Procedure

  1. Obtain the written offer or record base pay, currency, pay period, location, level, title, hours, start date, and deadline.
  2. Inventory bonus, commission, equity, retirement, health, leave, schedule, remote terms, travel, severance, probation, review timing, and contingencies.
  3. Research comparable scope using several dated sources; normalize location, currency, level, company type, and total compensation.
  4. Define priorities, acceptable package, walk-away conditions, and alternatives without fabricating competing offers.
  5. Build a concise case from role scope, relevant evidence, scarce requirements, and the requested change.
  6. Choose an anchored but supportable request and two tradeable alternatives.
  7. Rehearse questions, silence, pushback, budget constraints, partial movement, and a request for decision time.
  8. Negotiate through the authorized contact, confirm each change in writing, and review the complete revised package.
  9. Keep personal needs private unless disclosure is purposeful and safe.

Failure plan

  • If pressure shortens the stated decision window, ask for the policy and record the change.
  • If an offer is withdrawn or changed, preserve the written record and reassess rather than inventing leverage.
