Plan a career pivot

Test and stage a new career direction using transferable evidence, experiments, constraints, and decision gates.

Procedure

  1. Define the desired change, reasons, nonnegotiables, uncertainty, financial runway, and decision horizon.
  2. Inventory current evidence, transferable skills, relationships, credentials, obligations, and energy.
  3. Research actual tasks, conditions, entry paths, compensation, demand, progression, and risks in candidate directions.
  4. Speak with practitioners and compare independent evidence with promotional claims.
  5. Design low-cost experiments such as shadowing, projects, study, volunteering, freelance work, or adjacent responsibilities.
  6. Set evidence thresholds for continue, revise, pause, and stop decisions.
  7. Plan skill-building, materials, network, income bridge, timeline, and fallback without hiding tradeoffs.
  8. Review after each experiment and update the target rather than defending sunk effort.

Guardrails

  • Do not promise demand, pay, fit, credential recognition, or a timeline without current evidence.
  • Never pressure someone to disclose private reasons or take unaffordable risk.
  • Do not mistake consuming content about a field for doing its work.
