Explain an employment gap
Explain an employment gap with accurate dates, proportionate context, relevant activity, and forward-looking readiness while protecting privacy.
Explain only what is useful and safe to disclose.
When to use
- Use for caregiving, health, study, relocation, redundancy, job search, independent work, travel, or other career breaks.
- Do not invent consulting, hide dates deceptively, disclose diagnoses unnecessarily, or shame the candidate for a lawful break.
Procedure
- Verify dates and determine whether the gap needs explanation in the resume, cover letter, application, or interview.
- Identify the minimum truthful context that resolves likely confusion.
- Inventory relevant study, care, community, project, contract, recovery, or skill-maintenance activity without manufacturing employment.
- Write a neutral label and one or two factual lines when an entry helps.
- Protect medical, family, legal, financial, and third-party privacy.
- Connect current readiness to evidence without claiming the gap caused unrelated strengths.
- Save the approved wording in an application document and rehearse a concise spoken explanation plus a boundary for intrusive questions.
- Check dates across resume, profiles, forms, and references.
