Count something for a week
Use with: build-website. Resume line when done: Ran {project_name}, a week-long observational count of {thing}, published with methodology at {url}
Brief
Pick something countable in your daily orbit and count it the same way for a week: cafeteria line length every five minutes, hallway traffic between periods, cars rolling the stop sign on your corner. Then chart it and write up what you found. The discipline of counting the same thing the same way is the skill being built.
Personalize
- The thing you can reach daily. It has to sit on your existing routes; a count that needs a special trip dies by Wednesday.
- Your protocol, written first. What counts as one, the exact window, your position. When an edge case forces a judgment call, write the ruling down and apply it for the rest of the week.
- Count behavior in public, never people's identities. Tallies of cars or line lengths are fine; photos of identifiable people or license plates are not.
Milestones
- Write the protocol: definition of one count, time window, location, edge-case rules.
- Do a fifteen-minute pilot count; fix whatever the protocol got wrong.
- Collect for the week, logging on paper or phone at the moment of observation, with any missed sessions marked.
- Structure the tallies into one data file.
- Chart the week (zero-based axis, labeled units) and publish the page: protocol, chart, data table, and a short write-up.
Done means
- Live URL with protocol, chart, table, and write-up together
- Data collected live during observation, never reconstructed later
- Missed sessions shown as gaps
- The write-up describes patterns without claiming causes the count cannot support
- At least 5 commits across at least 4 distinct days, authored by you
- SESSIONS.md has an entry per session, written by you
