Starter Job hunt skill

Prepare for a phone screen

Prepare for a recruiter or hiring-manager phone screen with a short role narrative, verified logistics, and questions for the next step.

Prepare for a useful conversation, not a memorized speech.

When to use

  • Use for scheduled recruiter, talent, or hiring-manager calls.
  • Adapt the depth if the invitation includes technical or case content.

Procedure

  1. Verify the caller, employer, role, time zone, length, phone number, format, and accommodation contact.
  2. Read the current role description and identify the five most important responsibilities or constraints.
  3. Prepare a 60-second truthful introduction connecting present work, two relevant strengths, and interest in this role.
  4. Select three brief examples that prove the most important requirements.
  5. Prepare factual answers for availability, work authorization if legitimately asked, location, compensation expectations, and job-change reasons without oversharing protected or private information.
  6. Write four questions about role scope, success, team, process, and timing.
  7. Test signal, battery, audio, voicemail, quiet space, notes, water, and a backup contact path.
  8. After the call, record facts, commitments, unanswered questions, and the promised follow-up date.
