Log video footage

Log video footage with source identifiers, time ranges, content, quality, rights, and editorial notes.

Create a source-traceable map of what exists without turning interpretation into fact.

Procedure

  1. Preserve original file names, cards, reels, cameras, dates, and backup locations.
  2. Confirm frame rate, timecode, audio channels, synchronization, and proxy relationship.
  3. Watch at sufficient attention and record exact in and out time ranges.
  4. Describe action, speaker, location, subject, and spoken topic neutrally.
  5. Mark focus, exposure, stability, audio, continuity, and technical problems.
  6. Flag standout moments, alternate takes, coverage gaps, rights, and sensitivity limits.
  7. Link the log to transcripts, releases, shot lists, and source files.
  8. Spot-check timecodes and save a versioned footage log.

Guardrails

  • Do not rename or alter camera originals while logging.
  • Never infer identity, motive, or factual truth from appearance alone.
  • Keep restricted participant and location information out of broad logs.
