Analyze qualitative research
Analyze qualitative research through documented familiarization, coding, comparison, reflexivity, theme development, negative cases, and traceable reporting.
Keep interpretations traceable to context-rich evidence.
When to use
- Use for thematic, framework, content, narrative, discourse, grounded, or case-based analysis consistent with the study design.
- Do not present selected quotations as representative without explaining sampling and analytic logic.
Procedure
- Reconfirm question, analytic approach, participant protections, data boundaries, and researcher position.
- Verify transcript or record completeness and preserve links to source audio, field notes, documents, or observations.
- Familiarize with the full corpus before finalizing a code structure.
- Create codes with definitions, inclusion and exclusion rules, examples, and version history.
- Code systematically while writing memos about decisions, surprises, assumptions, and relationships.
- Compare cases, groups, settings, time points, contradictions, absences, and negative cases.
- Develop themes or explanations that combine pattern, meaning, context, and boundary.
- Test alternatives, seek disconfirming evidence, and use additional analysts or participant feedback only where methodologically appropriate.
- Protect identities in excerpts and avoid unnecessary demographic combination.
- Report analytic steps, evidence, uncertainty, transfer limits, reflexivity, and unresolved interpretations.
Worked example
Interview analysis initially labels every complaint as lack of trust. Negative-case review finds participants who trust staff but cannot access the service schedule. The final analysis separates institutional trust from practical access and links both themes to coded excerpts and context.
